WHAT YOU ARE TRAINING
We’re teaching the dog to be accepting of novelty.
WHY SHOULD YOU TRAIN THIS
- It increases confidence.
- It’s fun.
HOW YOU WILL TRAIN THIS
Use objects that you have at home that your dog can explore with their paws! The aim here is to build your dog’s comfort and confidence with their feet coming into contact with something novel! For this game you can use anything! Really think outside the box. Use things that have unique surfaces, that move, that make noise when a paw comes into contact with it. Scatter food on the surfaces in the hope that the dog will walk onto them. Do not force your pup. Reward your pup with praise for bravery.
The world is your oyster with this game! The more you introduce novelty in a positive way, the more flexible and resilient your dog will become.
- Be prepared to start with items that the dog is comfortable with.
- Watch your dog’s body language to ensure that they’re having fun.
- Repeat this game throughout your dog’s life, each time with novel surfaces.
- Look out for novel surfaces that your dog can interact with when you’re out and about.
